Whatever you choose, it should not only be functional and practical, but it should be comfortable and help patients feel at home. Walk through each of the rooms associated with your office, and make a specific list of what each room will need to help your practice run smoothly.

You need to start getting your name out there and market yourself to bring in new business. Look into leaving business cards and posters at local pharmacies, grocery stores, and on church bulletin boards. Make sure to get an owner's consent before posting anything, of course. Mass mailers are another option, and you definitely want to plan on having an advertised open house to celebrate your grand opening.

Arrange for your contractual arrangements with outsourced services. You will need to interview and choose a laboratory service if you are not planning on having a lab in the office. You will need to keep a close rein on your finances: some practices have staff take care of billing and insurance company claims. However, doing in-house accounting leaves a practice vulnerable to headaches, and mistakes or oversights may cost the office a small fortune.

Many practices choose to outsource medical billing to a professional company whose employees specialize in tracking down unpaid bills and are experienced in dealing with insurance company claims.

Opening a medical practice is just like opening a business: the doctor is the boss who must be in charge of overseeing all facets of his or her office. Make sure you take care of housekeeping duties in the months leading up to your grand opening, so that you can confidently give excellent care to the very first patient who walks through your doors.
